The Orton Effect is named after Michael Orton who first used the technique is a sandwich of two images, one in focus the other out of focus. Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant have both used the technique successfully in their work as well.

So today, we will try and explore this technique in digital photo. I have the below image ready in black & white.

Right-click on the background layer in the layers palette and select Duplicate layer. With the duplicate layer selected choose Image > Apply Image, select the Screen blend mode and click Ok.

Duplicate this layer and set its blend mode to Multiply. Doing so has the effect of cancelling out the lightening effect from applying the Screen mode. With this topmost layer still selected apply a blur to it using Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Adjust the blur Radius to your choice of value – I used 5 but choose the best for your image.

here’s the final image.

lets compare before and after

Check out my latest post on Orton 3 layer effect.

yu-char-kway or Crispy Chinese Cruller

It has been a few days since my last post and I have been telling myself  to continue what I have been doing for the past 3 months. This week, I was required to travel to China for a Business trip, no matter how reluctant i am, I have to make this trip. Off course leaving Andrea behind was somehow heart breaking no doubt I believe the reward should be sweat.

So, what happen when west meet east? You will get Chinese cruller with tuna salad+mayonnaise  🙂  or Black & white sesame seed with Chinese cruller 🙂

the shop operates from 1pm and you can expects to wait before your turn.

look at the size of that thing! no wonder they are called the ‘extra long cruller”….

The yu-char-kway shop is next to “Loh Fu Chi” Bak Kut Teh in Air Itam.

There you go…miss little greedy with her yu-char-kway 🙂

btw, dont bother trying the Bah Kut Teh, the one at Sunshine Shine Bayan Baru taste so much better than this.

YCK8So, what do i think about the yu-char-kway, they are good and crunchy and weird at the same time….. not everyone are open to these combination but no harm to try. We like it and we will go back again.

here’s the map to get you there…enjoy!

I love doughnuts and all other sweet treats so I was over the moon when J.Co Donuts opened a branch in Penang. I’d heard a lot about these doughnuts from friends in KL.

poser posing in front of camera….

does this look familiar?

mini doughnuts…!

Jco6We left J.CO with a huge disappointment…. not because we missed the doughnuts but because of the service given to us. The staffs were not friendly at all. Andrea told me they came from Indonesia and this tell tales sign came from their badge. So what happen?

First of all, when i appraoched one of the female staff to request for WIFI password, the music was lound so end up asking her 3 times before I finally get what it mean, she was pointing to one of the doughnut and i was looking for a signboard which might wrote “WIFI password”, instead, it took me 3 times of “sorry, what’s your password” to realise the password is actually the name of the doughnut…..she tried to ignore me after my 2nd attempt and I can see that from her face.

this time, it happen before Andrea queue for the doughnut, I approached a staff who dress more like a supervisor, again, i asked for WIFI access ( ya, i am not a internet junky 🙂 but we were deciding to either take away or stay and enjoy the food if WIFI is available). She didnt bother to greet me and replied “yes” and moved on with her thing…i was prepared to ask the next question but I decided to move away since she showed no further interest in me. !!

So my summary? Well, i think Big Apple is more than good enough, dont bother trying J.CO unless you like to be treated this way. The taste and quality are very similar to Big Apple doughnut, i dont mind skipping this at all. Like everyone else said………as the end of the day….who pay their salary…..

Finally painting with light!!! LOL. Yes, had my camera set up on a tripod, with no light, the only light was from the torchlight.

I did a couple of shots to understand the correct setting and apparently a larger aperture (F11 & above) is the key to capturing this the way i intended. Photo taken at smaller aperture (f3.5~f8) allow too much light into the camera and tend to let the camera capture more of the surrounding. Since I prefer a darker surrounding, adjusting the aperture to minimum is the answer.

If you look carefully, you can see my face in the middle. The word I was trying to write is “I Lov U’

Taken using my Nikon D5000 18-55mm f3.5-5.6

And just to let you see what & how creative this set of technique can be, check out the video below, you will love it!
