Rice Dumpling Day – try saying that 3 times fast!

Today’s what I’ve always called Rice Dumpling Day 端午節 or better known as the Duanwu Festival, which the Chinese celebrate by making sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves.

It’s a family tradition for Mum to make sticky rice with meat dumplings every single year, she never varies from these fillings: beans, pork, salted egg yolk and Chinese mushrooms. The savoury rice dumplings are often eaten by us as a quick meal on the go. The sticky rice gets its dark brown colour from the soy sauce.

Andrea on the other hand, prefers the sweeter version which is white and has chopped peanuts inside. It’s a little hard to find these and her Mum usually gets it from the market.

You need to watch out after eating rice dumplings. When you have your first one, you usually think that it’s such a small portion, you can easily scoff a few down at a go … until when it all sinks into your stomach, that’s when you realise that sticky rice isn’t easily digested at all! You’d be suffering from indigestion for quite some time. So savoury or sweet – which one do you prefer?
