Smoky Jack Ribs & Steak House Penang

Our lunch buddy, OPK, was leaving Penang to move to KL. He’d never eaten at Smoky Jack before so we decided to have a farewell Friday night dinner there.

Smoky Jack is a fantastic feast for the eyes from the moment you step into its dimly lit interior. Think of Resident Evil crossed with Sleepy Hollow. There are gnarled tree branches curling all around you and why bother with the typical chairs when you can sit in giant, futuristic pods.

Take a look up onto the ceiling and your jaw will drop when you realise that there are literally dozens of old, battered doors hanging down on top of you. The interior designer must either taken elements from everyone’s worst nightmares or had a burst of creative genius when the concept for Smoky Jack was first visualised.

It was fully booked on a Friday night and as it’s situated within the central clubbing area of Penang, expect a chic, young crowd (no smoking allowed indoors, thankfully) during nights. Smoky Jack is famed for its ribs (beef and pork) and serves a moderate variety of Western food from grilled meats to pastas and sandwiches for those wanting a lighter option.

Battered and crisp, the onion rings made a yummy appetizer.

Everyone opted for the pork ribs which were wonderfully marinated, tender and nearly falling off the bone.SMJ10sss

As always, I picked something different from the crowd: my seafood baked rice – Andrea said that it looked small but full of cream and cheese, it kept me pretty full.

Verdict: Food was good, ambiance has to be seen to be believed. An all rounder crowd pleaser.
