Indulgence restaurant & living in Ipoh
After following the bride and groom to Taiping, Andrea was insistent that we make our way to Ipoh to try Indulgence, a boutique hotel and restaurant that she had heard about. We read our little makeshift map and stumbled around trying to find where it was and when we finally pulled up the driveway, we were incredibly tired, praying that the restaurant better be open.

The decor is chic and cozy, the staff were attentive and friendly. We loved the long, cushioned bench that was heaped with stacks of jewel toned cushions. Large potted plants make natural dividers between tables and the Tiffany style lamps add a bit of warm colour to the room.
After tasting the Haas Yes salad, our jaws dropped open. It was simple yet alluring with hidden gems of sugar encrusted pecans all sprinkled on top of a grilled avocado.
With our appetites whetted, the lamb loin with roasted vegetables arrived. It was utterly perfect - succulent, juicy and bursting with flavour.
We also tried the zita funghi, a vegetarian, cream based pasta with loads and loads of mushrooms. Be warned that the portion is a little small but the sauce blew us away. At most so-called Western restaurants in Penang, cream based pastas are something of a hit and miss with sauces tasting as though they were poured out from a cream of mushroom soup can. Not at Indulgence, you can literally taste the freshness of the cream combined together with the mushrooms’ heady earthiness.
Scones for dessert is a bit of a weird choice but we decided to give it a try after reading that the strawberry jam is home made. We were lucky that they had just a single scone left and after just one bite, we were in scone heaven! The scone is a bit different from traditional, heavy ones, it’s lighter and more bread like with raisins and was incredible when paired with fresh cream and the homemade strawberry jam.
Our sweet tooth was still insatiable so feeling a bit like piggies, we ordered another dessert – the raspberry and rhubarb trifle. This is perfect if you’re not a big fan of heavy, rich desserts.
Be warned that Indulgence is on the pricey side (friends from KL have commented that it is even more expensive than KL prices – be prepared to spend around RM150-RM250 for 2) but dining here is a must try. We would happily return except for only 1 complaint: it is a 2 hour drive away from Penang!
